Page Numbers Not Continuing From One Section to the Next in Word

You will have to visit the Page Number Format dialog box once for each section and set the numbering to "Continue from previous section."

An alternative would be to run a macro. Post back if you want to try it.

Hi Stefan,

Thank you so much for your assistance! I have tried what you suggested but still to no avail. My pages actually repeat the same numbers on each page and will not alter, even when I try to set the page number through the page number dialogue options.

I think it may be because for each chapter of the dissertation, the first page had a section break for the second page, in order to alter the header. I have attached pictures below to illustrate what I mean of how the headers differ and the need for section breaks.

In these two pics, the page numbers differ due to the section breaks which enables me to select the 'unlink from previous' which then allows me to manually input the page number. But on the next pages which have the same header as the second picture, there is no section break so the option to unlink them is not there and they all have the same page number, and the settings in the page number dialigue box will not reset them.

Thanks again for your help! Really appreciate it!!

How did you add the page numbers? Note that you can't type them in. You must enter a PAGE field. If you activate the header (or footer) you can insert the field by pressing Alt+Shift+P.

I added the numbers by clicking the cursor in the footnotes and typed it in. With each new chapter (which all begin with a section break) the page numbers start again at 1.

And after the second page in each chapter the numbers just repeat.

Thanks!

To insert page numbers, when you have the selection in the footer, press ALT+SHIFT+P

As I wrote, you can't type the numbers, because typed page numbers will be static. Use a PAGE field instead.

To find out if PAGE fields are being used at all, press Alt+F9 (on some keyboards, you have to press Alt+Fn+F9). For proper page numbers, you'll see { PAGE } instead of page numbers.

Thank you very much! I have got it sorted now by using what you suggestedAlt+Shift+P but still the numbers repeated so I had to go into the page number format box and select continue from previous on each page with a section break. However, I had pressedAlt+F9 as you suggested above, and it immediately altered all of my links to websites to include things as 'hyperlink' and completely changed their format. When I pressed undo it would not change it back. I have discovered that it has also done this to other word documents I have now aswell! Even though I did not press it on them.

Any ideas how to undo or change it back?

Many thanks!

You can turn off the display of field codes by pressing Alt+F9 a second time (or Alt+Fn+F9 if your keyboard requires it). The command is a toggle (on/off switch).
